Dear World, Twenty days from now, the Gbm Foundation for Epilepsy and Mental Wellbeing will be commemorating the 1st anniversary of Gabriel’s passing on to Glory. The Foundation was officially registered a few days thereafter too, and so it’s going to be a commemoration and a celebration.
Planned Activities in Fontem-Lebialem
Fontem-Lebialem is the Foundation’s programme area par excellence, being Gabriel’s Village and Division of origin. It however is one of those areas in Cameroon where stigmatization and marginalization of epileptics and mentally challenged persons is still so rife. These may be due to several reason with a main one being ignorance and intolerance.
To this effect, the Programme Manager for the Foundation in Cameroon, Mrs Bibiana Taku, will join others at the community radio on the 22nd of July to officialy launch the Let’sdare2talk about it campaign. She will equally in her capacity as Gabriel’s mum, join a panel of distinguished personalities to discuss the myth and realities surrounding these illnesses which are so misunderstood and feared.
Stakeholders invited include the following
- a designated epileptic
- a traditional ruler
- a priest or pastor
- a medical doctor
- a social worker
- a traditional healer (if any can be identified)
Aims of the Campaign
- defining epilepsy & understanding epilepsy as opposed to perceptions & beliefs
- Diagnosing epilepsy
- Caring for epileptics
- Access to treatment
- Inclusion of epileptics
Other Planned Activities
Other activities are planned not only for the 22nd which is also the World Brain Day, but for that week leading up to the 2nd of August. Similar sensitization campaigns are currently being organized with other radio networks in different cities like Buea and Douala in the South West Region of Cameroon. A prominent TV network has also been contacted to produce a documentary on the International Brain Day and Epilepsy in Lebialem. All these activities will be covered by the national media known as CRTV, all in all showing the importance of the events.
Kindly Get Involved and donate to support the cause
If we want to make a difference in both our lives and those our fellow humans, we have to get involved in a cause as noble as this. The Gbm-em Foundation is still learning to walk and create an impact in the target communities, but it can not do this all on its own. That is why partners and sponsors are highly solicited and welcomes as one of the ways to get involved in its activities. Please do not hesitate to contact us and why not send us your stories too.
